In this role, you’re going to have the opportunity to:
• Flex your visionary style to build and manage a best-in-class program for our high- and middle-school youth with an ambitious, but attainable goal of increasing active participation to 100+ youth within 6 months.
• Use the autonomy afforded to you to provide fun, exciting, life-changing experiences that enable our youth to develop their relationship with God and enhance their spiritual growth as well as help them develop positive, healthy relationships with others.

You will be responsible for:
• Identifying the needs and interests of teens within the church and local community (we draw from at least 4 different high schools and 4 different middle schools) to then plan and execute enriching activities such as service projects, mission trips, bible studies, hip events and meet-ups, and day to day outreach
• Making the Gospel come alive and inspiring our youth to follow Jesus in their daily lives by developing meaningful relationships with them
• Creating parallel, but separate programs for our middle-school youth and high-schoolers
• Working closely with church leadership to promote and grow the program
• Engaging and involving parents and other adult volunteers
• Tangibly measuring your success by reporting monthly increases in participation and events

Your success is measurable and will be determined by your ability to:
• Relate with youth while at the same time be a leader to them
• Demonstrate the challenging balance of coach, counselor, spiritual advisor, and friend to our youth
• Provide fearless leadership, planning, communication, persuasion, and presentation skills
• Possess an unparalleled work ethic

To be most successful, you will have the following:
• A bachelor’s degree in a related field (including, but not limited to theology, youth ministry, sociology, psychology, education, etc.) with an ideal candidate possessing a Master’s degree
• 1-3 years of relevant experience gained through paid positions, volunteer work, and/or internships
• Examples of high integrity, sound judgment in challenging situations, and grace under pressure

Position Description:

Hales Franciscan High School in Chicago, IL is seeking a Service-Learning Coordinator and Religion Teacher for the 2012-2013 academic year; anticipated start date August 1, 2012. The Service-Learning Coordinator and Religion Teacher ensures that the service-learning program and procedures throughout the school are upheld and students receive sound theological education. The Service-Learning Coordinator and Religion Teacher upholds Catholic, Christian teaching as promoted by the Franciscan tradition through instruction of religion courses and leadership of the school-wide service-learning program.

Hales Franciscan High School is a historically African-American, all-male Catholic college preparatory school, and a not-for-profit, independent high school, fully accredited by the North Central Association and certified by the Illinois State Board of Education. The mission of the school community is to develop young men “Unto Perfect Manhood” as evidenced by their academic achievement, service, and spirituality. Service (demonstrating discipleship through responsible citizenship and contributions to the community) is a core-value of the school.

Duties and Responsibilities:

All duties and responsibilities related to the instruction of Religion. Teach at most four sections of religion courses; meet faculty attendance requirements, update Edline, assist with student supervision and teacher substitutions, appropriately model a commitment to the growth and development of each student; write and submit a course syllabus and lesson plans as required, communicate student expectations to students and parents as well as mid-term, quarterly and semester grades; participation in on-going curriculum and professional development; collaboration with school administration and the counseling and Title One departments in support of each student.
Design, establish, promote and facilitate an efficient school-wide service learning hours reporting and tracking system. Create and provide service learning procedures and documents for the school community, including a procedure guide, a reflection process for students, an hour log, and other similar documents; Keep accurate and up-to-date service hour records for entire student body; frequently publish student service hour summaries for students, parents, and faculty; Communicate requirements to students and parents; Coach all students in meeting their service hour requirements.
Build school spirit around service-learning; Lead workshops for class sections about the value of service learning; Train faculty and staff in service-learning philosophy and methods; Assist faculty with service learning initiatives throughout the curriculum; Promote service-learning philosophies through the direction of school activities and publicity; Research funding and grant opportunities to support the service learning program at the school; Participate in service-learning professional development.
Provide meaningful service-learning opportunities for students; Manage and oversee all service learning endeavors within the school community; Network with community organizations and build community relationships to connect students to community service opportunities; Serve as the community liaison between the school and the larger community for service events and opportunities; Support clubs, sports teams, alumni, parent groups and other stakeholders in planning and leading their own service projects and events; Plan and lead regular service experiences for students; Develop and direct 1-3 service-learning trips or retreats during the academic school year; Plan and lead school-wide and class service days.

Qualifications:

Required:
Bachelor’s degree in education, ministry, theology, social work, counseling, or related field.
A strong background in Catholic Christian theology.
Minimum of one year of teaching experience and/or demonstrated ability to instruct multicultural students in an urban educational setting.
Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
Strong computer skills.
An understanding and respect for Catholic-Christian theology and philosophies related to service and social justice.
Experience with creative programming and curriculum for high school students.
Preferred:
Experience with Edline and GradeQuick programs.
A background in Christian service-learning instruction and leadership.
A background in Franciscan spirituality and a working knowledge of Catholic Social Teaching.
Experience coordinating service trips and retreats for urban youth.
An ability to lead Catholic religious formation experiences and model Gospel-living.

As the Youth Ministry Team Leader at St. James’ Church your mission is igniting passion in young people (grades 9-12) for a relationship with Jesus Christ that is life-changing and life-long.

Evaluating this ministry requires becoming familiar with and assessing our present Sunday morning offering, youth group, confirmation (at least every other year), monthly youth worship (Ignite), a “girls only” group, 30 Hour Famine, Happening, Young Life, and Diocesan and other Christian events.

Connecting and networking with other Christian churches and organizations, you will form partnerships with persons and groups in the community, with schools and others to organize activities and events that participants will come away from saying “WOW! That was fun. That was real. What’s next?”

Using all the tools in the box (i.e. music, drama, arts, service, sports, social media, your phone, tablet or pc, etc) and even inventing a few new tools you will convince High School students with no free time why the time with the St James’ Youth Ministry will be their best time.

Imagination, vision, and an ability to see the big picture are keys to growing this enduring ministry. Your magnetic personality will attract. Your excellent communication skills will convince. To be successful in this part time (18 hours a week) mission enterprise, you love Jesus and engage in practices that sustain and deepen your life as a disciple. You have an excellent grasp of technology, and are probably just a little “crazy in a good way”. You may or may not be an Episcopalian, and you absolutely celebrate the joy of Youth. Reporting to the senior pastor, and using excellent collaborative skills, you are comfortable communicating with and leading a diverse group.

General
The ideal candidate is an energetic, creative, high-energy individual with the ability to motivate others, someone who has a passionate, growing, personal relationship with Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior with a clear calling to youth and young adult ministry. This person casts vision, provides leadership, and effectively equips volunteers and corresponding staff to partner in the ministry under their oversight. Qualifications:
• Possess a mature growing Christian faith with the ability to articulate that faith and inspire youth.
• Called to and passionate for youth and young adult ministry.
• Ability to develop a good rapport with students, leaders, and parents
• Strong planning and organizational skills, and a high level of self motivation.
• Strong oral and written communication skills. Effective communication in both public and personal settings.
• Commitment to a team concept of ministry. Values team development and working with a variety of people.
• Musical ability i.e. guitar, voice, etc. with experience and desire to utilize these gifts as part of youth events.

Preferred
• Bachelor’s degree in education, youth ministry or a related field, plus two years experience working with youth and/or young adults, providing leadership and assisting them in developing a mature faith; OR equivalent combination of education and/or experience..

Responsibilities and Expectations
• Lead all youth ministries in such a way as to create a unified and cohesive program for youth and family ministry that is in line with the youth ministry philosophy for Still Waters United Methodist Church.
• Plan and implement age-appropriate activities along with adult volunteers that connect relational and transformational themes through fellowship, fun and faith development. Lead the planning and execution of special youth events, such as retreats, mission trips, recreational outings and outreach opportunities.
• Recruit, organize, motivate and support a large group of adult volunteers and parents to aid in program implementation and development.
• Develop and coach a program leadership team (youth council) consisting of both youth and adults. Coordinate and lead regular meetings for the team.
• Encourage and help integrate youth into all aspects of the church’s ministries
• Co-facilitate confirmation activities and the transition to youth ministries
• Develop relationships with the youth, their family members, and other youth not currently involved in the church (inactive church members and youth in the community).
• Communicate weekly schedule in the church office
• Actively communicate with youth, parents, congregation, and church leadership through newsletter, emails, phone, and internet on a regular basis.
• Provide appropriate referral if the need for youth counseling is identified
• Track youth activities and volunteer involvement for quarterly reports
• Help to create a budget for the joint youth ministry each year. Coordinate with staff as needed to track budget usage and accurate accounting for money collection.
• Lead by example and be visible in worship and in the life of the church.
• Coordinate with and take advantage of community and United Methodist resources for youth program development.
• Seek professional development opportunities through education and peer networks.

Reporting Structure and Hours
The Youth Ministry Director is accountable to the Staff Parish Relations Committee and under the immediate supervision of the pastor. He/she will supervise volunteer staff and Tide-pool coordinator in this ministry, attend weekly staff meetings, and connect regularly with the senior pastor. This is a full time position with expectation of involvement in worship, youth activities, and community events that are important to the youth you serve.
